Preparing for the Arrival of your Movers
If you’ve never hired one of the many moving companies in Chicago before, it
can be scary. You may be uncertain about what you’ll be responsible for or how
to properly prepare for the arrival of your movers. Here are a few preparation
tips that will ensure a smooth moving day for everybody.
·
Before the movers arrive, know the company
guidelines. There are some things that movers will not move, as per company restrictions.
For instance, some will not move flammable items or household cleaners while
other will not handle things for liability reasons, such as important documents
or medication. You may be required to transport these items on your own.
·
Prepare your home and items for the arrival of
your movers. Ensure that doorways are not blocked by boxes. Prepare larger
pieces of equipment—empty your fridge and allow for the proper time to defrost.
Drain the water line from your washing machine. Failure to carry out these
simple necessary steps will result in a delay and could lead to extra costs for
you.
·
Keep pets contained. Letting your furry friend
run freely puts not only the pet in danger, but also the movers. If you can,
have a friend watch the pet for the day, or, keep him or her contained in a
room that is already packed up.
·
Have drinks and food ready. You certainly aren’t
responsible for feeding your movers a gourmet meal, but having bottles of water
on hand or ordering a couple of pizzas will keep you and the movers feeling
energized throughout strenuous activity. This extra thought will go a long way
in the service you receive.
Hiring a moving company can help to make your move easy and
quick. Use these tips to prepare for their arrival, further making your day a
success!

Have a Smooth Moving Day with These Packing Tips
So you’ve finally put a deposit down on a new home!
Congratulations! Unfortunately, now comes the hard part—the move. Moving into a
new location can be exciting, refreshing and…. stressful (especially the
packing phase). But it doesn’t have to be! Here are some helpful packing tips
to make your transition as painless as possible.
·
Color-code your packing boxes and assign colors
to different rooms. For instance, use orange duct tape to make note that a
specific box is filled with kitchen items. Use green for a box filled with
living room décor.
·
Keep packing boxes to a maximum of 50 pounds.
Heavy boxes mean struggling to carry them, and might require more bodies to
move them. Keep boxes to a manageable weight so that one person can easily
carry them.
·
Use your move as an opportunity to clean out unnecessary
items. As you’re rummaging through all of your belongings, you’re likely to
find things that you didn’t even remember you had, which means that you might
not actually need them! Donate them or throw them out so that you can lighten
your load.
·
If you can, head into your new home a day before
the big moving day so that you clean up a bit. Chances are, surfaces may be
dusty or tiles may be moldy. Cleaning beforehand will allow you to start off
with a clean slate.
·
Keep important can’t-live-without items
together. Pack passports, birth certificates, necessary medications, and other
important documents and items together, with nothing else. This will ensure
that you don’t lose any important paperwork and that you’re not rummaging
frantically through boxes to find your medication at a time of need.
·
Consider hiring
a moving company. You may think you know the basics of moving, but there
are some who are well-trained in making successful moves. Hiring a moving
company will allow you to make the move with experts on your side.
Moving can be one of the most stressful experiences that
we’ll encounter in our lifetime. Make the move a bit easier with these simple
tactics!

Seasonal Moving Tips
Winter is quickly approaching and as you know, Chicago
winters are nothing to shake a stick at. Moving in the winter is sometimes
unavoidable, especially when it feels like winter time for the majority of the
year. Chicago
moving companies like us know the challenges of a winter move! There are a
few things you should remember when moving around this time of year so
everything goes smoothly.
- Prepare for snow: Old man winter can come knocking at any time and icy, slippery conditions can slow down the moving process. Make sure your shovel is the last thing you pack up on moving day! Have salt and a shovel ready and make sure you create wider paths than usual. Remember, there are more people going in and out of your home when you’re moving, so wider paths can make transporting your valuables much safer.
- Prepare your new home: Is the heat on in your new place? This seems pretty self-explanatory but this is one of those measures that are often over looked. Moving into a cold apartment or house in the middle of winter is no fun and slows down the unpacking process.
- Prepare your floors: Lay down something around the entrances to your new home before the move even begins. The last thing you want is to do is intense carpet cleaning after settling into your new abode. Make sure you lay down something non-slip – using tarp is a disaster waiting to happen.

Step 1: Have a Plan
Moving is a stressful time and Devon Moving Company works
hard to relieve the majority of the stress that is associated with moving. What
makes Devon Moving Company the best
movers in Chicago is that fact that we work quickly, safely, and affordably
– however, you know better than us how your home or apartment should
look!
Having a game plan once the big day arrives is crucial to
the fluidity of the move. When you decide on a new home or apartment, it’s easy
to envision your belongings in that new area. Though all too often, people
forget about the smaller things and when that important time comes, they don’t
know where to put it.
Adding confusion to the moving process is never recommended,
so what we do recommend is creating a floor plan and writing down where
everything goes! Make sure you are aware of all your large pieces: sofas, beds,
dressers, etc. and know where you are going to put them in the new place.
From there you can concentrate on some of the smaller items
such as lighting, small tables, and decorations so you can get a better
understanding on what you are working with. Without a floor plan for your new
dwelling, it’s hard to know where everything is going to go and if everything
is going to fit.
Take it from the best
movers in Chicago, you’re going to want to plan ahead!
